Thomas Rhodes2 (Alex.1) was born March 20, 1813 in Tennessee, and died June 9, 1897. He married Penina Stancil. She was born August 14, 1812 in North Carolina, and died on September 5, 1884. They were buried in Stokes Cemetery, Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois. Some of their children spelled their surname "Rhoades."

CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH RHODES AND JASPER N. STOKES
(Child #1 of Thomas Rhodes and Penina Stancil)

Elizabeth Rhodes3 (Thos.2, Alex.1) was born in about 1832 in Tennessee. She married Jasper N. Stokes, son of William R. Stokes and Mary Scribner, on March 30, 1852 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was born in in Illinois in about 1834; he was age 16 when the 1850 census for Fayette County, Illinois was taken. After Elizabeth's death he married Mary Lovegrove, daughter of John and Susan Lovegrove, on January 7, 1859 in Fayette County, Illinois. He married a third wife, Rebecca E. Adams on December 16, 1863 in Fayette County, Illinois. He had two more children: 1. Madison M. Stokes, 2. Lou Ellen Stokes. It is unclear if they were the children of his second or third wife. He died March 14, 1870, and was buried in Stokes Cemetery, Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois.

Edna Jane Rhodes3 (Thos.2, Alex.1) was born in Tennessee in 1834; she was 26 years of age in 1860. She married Richard Tillman Cole, son of John Cole and Rutha Caroline Conner, on July 12, 1849 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was born in Tennessee in October, 1827 according to the Fayette County 1900 census record of Hurricane Township. Family sources give the county of his birth as Bedford.

Theresa "Thurza" Rhodes3 (Thos.2, Alex.1) was born November 11, 1839 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died March 14, 1913. Her name was given as Theresa in her obituary. She was buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. She married James Martin Jerdan, son of James Jordan and Mary Harris3 (Wooten2, Isaac1) on April 22, 1858 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was born August 13, 1836 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died January 10, 1865 in a Civil War prison. Their children are listed under his name in Part III, Chapter 9, Descendants of Mary Harris.

She married her second husband, John Casey, Jr., son of John Casey, Sr. and Drucilla Hill, on April 7, 1868 in Fayette County, Illinois. She was his third wife. He had nine children by his first wife, Elizabeth Whitten, and four children by his second wife, Lavina Whitten. John was born July 21, 1812 in Warren County, Kentucky, and died February 16, 1877. He was buried in Casey Cemetery, Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois.

She and her third husband, Martin H. Whitten, son of Jonathan Whitten and Mary Mounts, were married on February 24, 1878 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was previously married to Clarissa Williams on February 22, 1852 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was born December 19, 1830 in Wilson County, Tennessee. He died June 2, 1894, and was buried in Old Hurricane Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois.

He was born December 31, 1855 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died August 28, 1839 in Bingham, Fayette County, Illinois. Lavina and Woodford were buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. They were living in Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois when both 1880 and 1900 censuses were taken. He was previously married to Mahala F. Hicks, daughter of Alfred R. Hicks3 (Catherine Harris3, Wooten2, Isaac1) on April 11, 1878 in Fayette County, Illinois. He and his first wife, Hannah Bolyard, were married February 3, 1859 in Fayette County, Illinois. She was born in Ohio, and died August 6, 1889 at age 50 years 1 month and 2 days; therefore she was born about July 4 1839. She was buried in Casey Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. Alexander married his second wife, Sarah (Merkins) Hardin, widow of John Hardin, on December 8, 1889 in Fayette County, Illinois. She was born in about 1855 in North Carolina, and was the daughter of John Merkins and Miss Bowman. The family was living in Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois at census time in 1860, 1870, and 1880.

The record stated that Sarah was the mother of eight children of whom six were then living.

Louisa W. Rhodes3 (Thos.2, Alex.1) was born in September 1844 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died in 1901. The name on her marriage license was "Lusezuelthy Rhodes." She married Thomas B. Stokes (1844-1888), son of William R. Stokes and Mary Scribner, on November 7, 1860 in Fayette County, Illinois. They were living in Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois when the censuses were taken in 1870, 1880, and in 1900. Louisa and two of her daughters were listed together in 1900. At that time she was a widow, and the mother of 13 children, three of whom were living. We haver record of 11 of their children; apparently they had two more. Louisa and Thomas were buried in Stokes Cemetery, Hurricane Township, Fayette, Illinois.

She married Elias Terrill Merriman on March 28, 1861 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was born April 16, 1843, the son of Dempsey Merriman and Matilda Scribner. He died October 7, 1926.

She married John Henry Slater on September 6, 1876 in Fayette County, Illinois. He was born in 1848, and died February 4, 1888, age 39 years 6 months and 3 days. He was buried in Stokes Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. They were living in Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois, in 1880. Margaret was living with her son-in-law Zachary Taylor Harris and daughter, Laura, in Ramsey Township, Fayette County, Illinois in 1900.

Casey, daughter of John Casey and Lavina Hilton, on April 3, 1873 in Fayette County, Illinois. She was born April 8, 1857 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died December 10, 1887 in Oconee, Shelby County, Illinois. He and his second wife, Emily Jane Hicks, daughter of Jefferson Hicks and Frances Priscilla Sears, were married on March 19, 1889 in Fayette County, Illinois. She was born August 12, 1861 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died June 24, 1953 in Pana, Christian County, Illinois. They were living in Audubon Township, Montgomery County, Illinois in 1880, and in Ramsey Township, Fayette County, Illinois, in 1900. After Elijah's death, Emily Jane married William Harvey Rhodes, son of McComas Rhodes2 (Alex1) and Sarah Jane Cole.

Alta P. Rhodes4 (Elijah3, Thos.2, Alex.1) was born January 20, 1882 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died December 27, 1971 at Peoples Hospital in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa. She married Howard Slater. Four children were named in the obituary of Alta Slater which appeared in the Ramsey News Journal on 6 Jan 1972. They were Cecil, Dale, Clifford, and Zoe Slater. The obituary of their son, Lynn O. Slater, follows:

Lynn O. Slater:
Lynn O. Slater, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 1971 while he and his wife were visiting in Texas. He was the son of Howard and Alta (Rhodes) Slater, former residents of Ramsey and Oconee communities. His father passed away some years ago. He leaves his wife, one son, Duane Slater of Springville, Ill, one daughter, of Waterloo, Iowa, four grandchildren, his mother, sister, Zoe Vonda Vore, and four brothers, Cecil and Dale, both of Aurora, Iowa, Clifford of Jessup, Iowa, and James of Amherst, Wisc. He was a nephew of Louie V. Rhodes of Ramsey, Bessie Merriman, Fay and Ray Rhodes of Pana, and Elma Klinghammer of Decatur, Ill. He was brought back to Cedar Falls for burial.
