Descendants of Lucinda HarrisChapter 6 of Part VIII, Descendants of Zachariah HarrisBy Garda M. Hodgson |
|
Lucinda Harris3 (Zach.2, Isaac1) was born in about 1807 in Hickman County, Tennessee. Her age was reported as "age 41" in the Shelby County, Illinois 1850 Census; however, the age of her brother, Pendleton Harris, was also reported as "age 41" in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois Census. There is no reason to suspect that they were twins. His age is consistent with subsequent census records through 1870. Lucinda was only found in this one census record. The ages of the other children in the family make it more likely that Lucinda was born in about 1807 rather than in 1809; at least the spacing of the children's births fit together better with that assumption. Lucinda married Alexander Rhodes in about 1826 while the Harris family was living in Humphreys County, Tennessee. He was born in Tennessee and may be the oldest son of Alexander Rhodes and Elizabeth Pettitte. He died in about 1829. More about this Rhodes family is found in Part IX - Some Descendants of Alexander Rhodes. After Alexander's death, Lucinda married Moses Kirk (Kurtz) on January 7, 1831 in Fayette County, Illinois, but this marriage did not last long. Additional information about Lucinda and Moses Kurtz (Kirk) was found in the publication of Hurricane Fork Settlement, which included the minutes of the United Baptist Church at Hurricane Fork, published in the Fayette County, Illinois Genealogical Society publication Fayette Facts Vol XII No. 3 p 45. On p 50: "20 Feb 1830. Rec'd Lucinda Roads (Rhodes) by letter." ... "18 Dec 1830. Rec'd Zechariah Harris by experience. Rec'd Moses Kirt (Kirk) by experience." "17 Mar 1832. Excluded Sis. Lucindy Kirts (Kirk) for leaving her husband without cause...." "Apr. 1832. The case of Bro. Moses Kirts (Kirk) taken up with him excluded for leaving the church in disorder..." Lucinda used the surname Rhodes when she married her third husband, John B. Hanes/Haines, son of Hezekiah and Barthena Haines, on June 25, 1841 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He was born in Warren County, Kentucky in about 1803; he was age 43 when the Montgomery County, Illinois 1850 census was taken. In the settlement of the Zachariah Harris estate, all the heirs signed a deed dated 9 May 1844. (Fayette County, Illinois Deed Book E p 441). John B. Haines and Lucinda (Harris) Haines both signed the deed with the rest of the heirs of Zachariah Harris. Lucinda and John B. Haines were living in Montgomery County, Illinois when the 1850 census of that county was taken. |
