Benjamin Harris3 (Zach.2, Isaac1) was born in Franklin County, Georgia, in about 1803; he was age 47 when the Christian County, Illinois 1850 Census was taken. He was very young when he moved with his parents from Franklin County, Georgia to Hickman County, Tennessee. Later, they moved to Humphreys County, Tennessee where they were living when he married his wife, Elizabeth. We do not know her maiden surname. The family moved to Illinois in about 1829. In 1850, Elizabeth was 52 years of age. They were still living in Christian County, Illinois in 1860, but were living with their son Gilbert Harris in Wilson County, Kansas at census time in 1870. In the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses, Elizabeth's birthplace was given respectively as Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina. Benjamin's will was dated October 1, 1872, and Letters Testamentary on his estate was granted by the Wilson County, Kansas Court to his brother Jacob Harris on February 4, 1873. |

Gilbert Harris4 (Benj.3, Zach.2, Isaac1) was born in Humphreys County, Tennessee, in about 1823; he was age 27 when the Christian County, Illinois 1850 census was taken. He died after 1870 and before October 1, 1872, the date his father's will was made. Benjamin Harris mentions "his widowed daughter-in-law" in his will. Gilbert was married twice. He married Frances N. Halford on January 9, 1845, in Fayette County, Illinois. She was born in about 1826 in Wayne County, Tennessee, the daughter of Andrew Halford and Elizabeth Harris3 (Wooten2, Isaac1). Gilbert and Frances had no children. After her death, he married Sarah E. Sears, daughter of John Sears and Anna Lona "Hannah" Johnson, on November 24, 1849, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born in Tennessee in 1832; she was age 18 when the Christian County, Illinois 1850 census was taken. They moved to Wilson County, Kansas after 1867 and before 1870. After Gilbert's death, Sarah married Ellison Denton, son of John Denton and Thurzy Estes, on March 2, 1873 in Wilson County, Kansas. He was listed as age 28 and she as age 40 at the time of their marriage. He was living with his parents and was age 6 when the 1850 Fayette County, Illinois census was taken. His parents, John and Thurzy Estes, were married in Fayette County, and all their children were born in Illinois. Sarah and Ellison had a son, David Denton, who was born in Wilson County, Kansas in 1875; he was age 5 at census time in Wilson County in 1880. There were other connections between this Denton family and the Harris Family. Ellison Denton's older brother, Macajah "Casey" Denton married Charlotte Malissa Harris, daughter of Henry M. Harris and Eliza Reeves. Also his sister, Lavina Denton married Gilbert Newton Harris, son of Henry M. Harris and Eliza Reeves. Henry M. Harris and Benjamin Harris are brothers and sons of Zachariah Harris and Bathsheba Haley. Sarah E. (Sears) (Harris) Denton later married Samuel Cobb, on October 13, 1879 in Wilson County, Kansas. He was of Linn County, Kansas, and was born in Illinois in about 1827; he was age 53 at census time in 1880 Wilson County, Kansas. |
