Descendants of Ancil Mancil HarrisChapter 2 of Part VIII, Descendants of Zachariah HarrisBy Garda M. Hodgson |
|
Ancil Mancil Harris3 (Zachariah Harris2, Isaac1) was born June 9, 1799 in Franklin County, Georgia. He moved with his father's family to Tennessee before 1807, first to Hickman County then to Humphreys County, shortly after 1813. It was there that he married Keziah Veatch, daughter of James Veatch and Mary Hopkins, on March 3, 1820. Ancil's sons and sons-in-law accompanied him with their families as they followed his father, Zachariah Harris, and his family to Illinois in about 1829. They settled in Hurricane Township, Fayette County, Illinois, where Ancil died November 17, 1842. A mix-up of information with regards to Ancil Mancil Harris's death place occurred when my grandmother, Mabel J. Overson, corresponded with relatives in Illinois, to get more information about the family. She was told that Mancil Harris died in Richmond, Ray County, Missouri. They were referring to the death of Mancil Ancil Harris, son of Ancil Mancil Harris and Keziah Veatch, but grandmother thought they meant Ancil Mancil Harris died there. This mixup was finally discovered when I received a letter from Mary Black dated August 28, 1984. Enclosed in the letter were pictures of the tombstones of Mancil Ancil and Elizabeth (Cole) Harris in the cemetery of the church where he last served. Mancil Ancil Harris was a Primitive Baptist Church Minister. The church where he last served was located five miles southwest of Richmond. Keziah (Veatch) Harris, widow of Ancil Mancil Harris, married John Bowles, on September 9, 1854 in Montgomery County, Illinois. She was listed with him in the 1860 census record of Montgomery County, Illinois, but in 1870, she was living with her son, Zachariah Obadiah Harris and family. Zachariah O. Harris died on October 25, 1875, but Keziah was still living with his widow and family in 1880. She died two years later on September 25, 1882 in Fillmore, Montgomery County, Illinois, and was buried in Craig Cemetery, Hurricane Township, Fayette County Illinois. Ancil Mancil Harris had six children who had descendants. There are separate chapters for each of them. The adopted children of the ninth child are listed on this page. You can use the hotlinks below, or at the top and bottom of this webpage, to "jump" directly to the separate chapters. |
