Descendants of Mary Emeline HarrisSubchapter 2.5 of Part VIII, Descendants of Zachariah HarrisBy Garda M. Hodgson |
|
Mary Emeline Harris4 (Ancil M. Harris3, Zach2, Isaac1) was born December 19, 1827 in Humphreys County, Tennessee, and moved with her parents to Fayette County, Illinois when she was under two years of age. She married Claiborne Louis Haines, son of John B. Haines and his first wife, Mary Lewis. Miss Lewis was the daughter of Earl Lewis of Wayne County, Tennessee. Mary and Claiborne were married July 14, 1849, in Fayette County, Illinois. Actually Claiborne's middle name was undoubtedly "Lewis," after his mother's surname, but his daughter was unaware of this, and spelled his middle name incorrectly. Claiborne was born July 22, 1828 in Wayne County, Tennessee. He served during the Civil War in the 39th Regiment, Company B, Illinois Volunteers. His wife gave him a diary as a going away present. He kept the diary during 1863, and for most of 1864. He contracted consumption during the war, but continued to fight even though he was coughing and spitting blood very badly. Finally, he was sent to the hospital in Philadelphia where he was discharged for disability on June 17, 1865, and returned home where he suffered the ravages of this disease (tuberculosis) until his death on June 13, 1866 at Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, B l3, Lot 40, Decatur, Illinois. His widow, Mary, later followed her daughter, Eliza Jane (Haines) Smith to Utah where she died on January 9, 1899 at Leamington, Millard County, Utah. She was buried on property owned by her son-in-law, Louis Morgan Bryant Smith. This property is on the west side of Leamington, Millard County, Utah. |
