Descendants of Catherine HarrisChapter 1 of Part VII, Descendants of Reuben HarrisBy Garda M. Hodgson |
|
Catherine Harris3 (Reuben2, Isaac1) was born in Greenville County, South Carolina in about 1792; she was 58 years of age when the Jefferson County, Iowa 1850 Census was taken. She died November 26, 1870 at age 78. She married Stephen Dill, who was of Scotch descent and fought under General Jackson in the War of 1812. The family was included in the Jackson County, Tennessee 1820 census enumeration, and the White County, Tennessee 1830 census record. They emigrated to Illinois in 1832, and were included in the census record of McDonough County, Illinois in 1840. By 1850, they were in Jefferson County, Iowa. Stephen Dill was age 75 and born in Pennsylvania according to the census that year. He died May 4, 1854 at age 84 years. Both he and his wife were buried in Liberty Cemetery, Blandinsville Township, McDonough County, Illinois. The second child of Catherine and Stephen Dill was a daughter that I was unable to identify with certainty, but there is a Sarah Dill who married Theodore B. Dubois on January 22, 1846 in Jefferson County, Iowa who could be this daughter. Theodore B. BuBois appears to be closely related to John W. DuBois who married Elizabeth Dill. There are many associations between them and the Stephen Dill family in the deed records, but I have not been able to find anything conclusive that postively identifies her as a daughter of Stephen and Catherine Dill. |

John Dill4 (Cath.3, Reuben2, Isaac1) was born in Jackson County, Tennessee in about 1814; he was 36 years of age when the Van Buren County, Iowa 1850 Census was taken. His wife, Ellen "Nellie" was born in Kentucky; she was 36 years of age in 1850. We do not know her surname. Their first three children were born in Illinois and the others were born in Iowa. They were living in Van Buren County, Iowa when the 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses were taken. |

Reuben Dill4 (Cath. Harris3, Reuben2, Isaac1) was born on about April 8, 1817 in Jackson County, Tennessee, and died July 1, 1873 (age 56y 2m 23d) in Hancock County, Illinois; his birthdate was computed from his age at death. He was buried in Liberty Cemetery, Blandinsville Township, McDonough County, Illinois. Reuben married Melissa Marlow on March 24, 1837, in McDonough County, Illinois. Melissa was born in 1816 in South Carolina, according to the 1850 census record of Jefferson County, Iowa. The Hancock County, Historical Society has published a list of the probate records of Hancock County for the years 1831-1940. A will of Melissa Dill issued January 10, 1902 in Hancock County, Illinois with James B. Dill as executor, was included on the list. The reference is to Box 310, and Will Book F p137, and Book A, p150. |

Solomon C. Dill4 (Cath. Harris3, Reuben2, Isaac1) was born on about September 13, 1822 in Jackson or White County, Tennessee. Death records indicate that he died September 10, 1881, age 60y 8d, in Appamoose County, Iowa, and was buried in Tullis graveyard; however, there is a marker in Liberty Cemetery, Blandinsville Township, McDonough County, Illinois, giving the date of his death as September 18, 1881, age 59y 5d. His birthdate was computed by others from his age at death. He married Leannah Harris, daughter of Reuben J. Harris3 (Reuben2, Isaac1) and Alice "Allie" Wolf on January 7, 1842 in McDonough County, Illinois. She was born in Jackson County, Tennessee, in about 1825.
