Silas Harris3 (Ben2., Isaac1)
was born December 15, 1792 in Greenville County, North Carolina, and died
January 12, 1853 Montgomery County, Illinois. He married Jane Hill
in 1812. Jane Hill was born in about 1794. Her brother, Jehu Hill, lived
in Pendleton District, South Carolina. Family records of descendants of
Silas and Jane Hill Harris indicate that they also lived in Pendleton
District, South Carolina before they moved to Tennessee (see note,
below). Zachariah Harris, oldest son of Silas and Jane (Hill) Harris,
died before 1850, so the place of his birth was not recorded in a census
record. Benjamin Franklin Harris, the second son, was born in Tennessee
according to the Madison County Illinois 1850 census record; however,
since he was born in 1816 it seems more likely that he was born in
Pendleton District, South Carolina, before they moved to Tennessee.
Silas Harris's name was on the tax records of White County, Tennessee
in 1825 and 1828, but records for all years did not survive.
[Note: On a separate page of the
marthaann.org
website, Doug Paulson has explained about the family tradition in
his Harris line, that Benjamin Harris, his son Silas Harris, and grandson,
Zachariah Harris all were considered to be "of the Pendleton District,
South Carolina." A link on the page goes to his research on the Pendleton
District, with links to definitive research sites. We have included a
somewhat edited copy of that page here.
This page also includes a couple of historical maps showing counties
and judicial districts of South Carolina before 1800. Apparently,
Pendleton District was initially a voting district aligned with
boundaries of the then Anglican Church Parish boundaries. Here is a
link to a website that includes an explanation of the origins of South
Carolina subdivisions with a
link to a map that displays these
Parish and voting districts overlaid on modern county boundaries (near
the bottom of the page).]
